GOING GREEN IN THE WORLD'S GREENEST CITY--Vancouver's young generation embraces higher density

NEWS FROM VANCOUVER which is always being held up to us as a well planned city - here is the real truth and it is not good

Letter to the Editor - Drost

Very enlightening to see State Shadow Planning Minister Brian Tee in the Age Business section on the 13th telling us what we already suspected that if he gets back into Government they will simply keep going with their hated and failed Melboune 2030 plan together with Melbourne @5 million, which was so unpopular across Melbourne that it helped bring down the Brumby Government. It does fit in with a speech I heard Brian Tee give in parliament that he was proud to belong to the party that brought in Melbourne 2030.

Remember that it involves cramming more high rise high density at railway stations and along and near all transport routes as well as developments dotted through the whole of suburbia and being opposed by all communities. He also mentions that they will keep the extended Urban Growth Boundary.

BAN DEVELOPER DONATIONS CALL - DO PUT ON A COMMENT OR WRITE A LETTER OF SUPPORT

I notice Kelvin Thomson is quoted. These donations should be banned otherwise there is always this suspicion that decisions are compromised.

Save the Yarra

THIS COULD SAVE THE YARRA FROM THE COPPIN GVE HAWHTORN DEVELOPMENT WITH IS IN VCAT RIGHT NOW. AND OF COURSE THE YARRA FOREVER.

This writer has got it wrong. The fact that Victrack have refused the development is nothing to do with celebrities, financial. Celebrities have as much right as anyone to object, not their fault the media give them publicity.

BIZARRE WAYS TO SQUEEZE 'EM IN. Charge by the kilometre.

Mark O’Connor commented on this article in The Conversation.:

To reduce congestion, imagine the government charged by the kilometre By David Hensher, University of Sydney The hip pocket must be where road pricing reform commences. The call for a congestion charge is getting louder and more frequent in many countries, as major metropolitan areas experience increasing levels… - -

Yes, an ingenious idea that might make good financial sense. Yet it's still a way of palliating (for a time) rather than solving the underlying problem. Why can't we have stable cities, like Europe does, rather than ones that are forever outgrowing their roads? and their parks, sewers, power and water infrastructures, water supplies, and perhaps even in time their food supplies? Why is

Planning Zone reform - planning backlash representation

Because Planning Backlash Inc were not happy with the composition of the Review Committee as it lacked resident representation, Minister Matthew Guy agreed to an additional member on the committee and so on our recommendation, Joanna Stanley of Brunswick Residents has been appointed and we can be sure that our residents rights will be protected.

The Windsor Hotel - about to be destroyed

The Windsor Hotel back in 1908 – our historical hotel which is about to be destroyed thanks to Heritage Victoria and the Brumby Government

ANOTHER ABSOLUTE DISGRACE. It sounds like below third world standards.

VCAT have, unusually, overturned one their own permits.
However, in this case, not for the better.  Originally, ignoring the objections of the council and residents, VCAT approved 24 story building in a 7.5 metre wide lane now they've overturned that decision and replaced it with a 32 story building - in a laneway 7.5 metres wide.
Not only that, the Tribunal approved the building having windows right to neighbouring property boundaries - acknowledging that this only source of light and air for some apartments and could be built out.
It will, however, afford a nice view of the neighbours with only 7.5 metres between the windows of the apartments in this building and the windows of the nearest apartment across the lane.

THE EXTRAORDINARY CITY OF MELBOURNE

SOMETHING REALLY  ASTONISHING HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO MY  ATTENTION TODAY.
This  does make you  wonder about the  democratic  system of  our central  city  and how this must  effect the planning decisions at times.

In all Council,  State and Federal elections  to be eligible to vote you have to be an Australian citizen – fair enough.    You cant vote in any other country when you might go there   for awhile.  However in the City  of Melbourne  you are able to vote  if  you have been in Melbourne for one month, no matter what your nationality.   One month!!!  Then you can vote  for councillors who will make major decisions about planning in our  City of Melbourne.

MORE ON THE URBAN GROWTH BOUNDARY EXTENSION

More letters published today gives you an indication of the unpopularity of this decision to extend the boundaries again. But probably the most interesting item is the result of the poll. 90% of the voters said NO to the plan. Pretty overwhelming one would say. We need to tell the government to listen to the voice of the people.

The Rezoning of Land on the Outskirts of Melbourne

These letters about it in the Age  spell it out.
Of course the biggest mistake is to keep immigration at such high levels  and the Federal government made it clear they  are increasing the numbers.
However, figures in Melbourne show that there is too much being built and  it cant be sold.
The developers are undeterred and push for even more land to develope as time goes by and the government have given in to them.
The worst feature  is the building on good farm and market garden land -  we are going to  regret this down the track  as food prices go up and you see more imported food in the supermarket.   Start reading the labels.
The fact is that we dont want to go up and we dont want to go out -  solution is to slow migration down to a sustainable number and then we will all be happy, because we are not happy now.

Yet another Box Hill tower wants to rise from the ashes

The last  30 plus storey tower of about 3 years ago  got defeated  and now here we go again.   Last time Matthew Guy, in opposition,   was, very correctly, on TV against it.    See the video on MARVELLOUSMELBOURNE.ORG
Here is the latest.  Why do designers put up  such unattractive buildings?

Dear Editor,

The founder of international talkfest TED, Chris Anderson, is terribly wrong if he believes a world of 10 billion people is a good thing, and that building bigger mega cities is ‘going to save humanity’ (‘Vertical living is the answer to the world’s population growth’ 29/5/12).
