State strips council powers

COUNCILS are to be stripped of planning power over key shopping and commercial hubs including Camberwell, Preston and Doncaster as part of a State Government bid to salvage its Melbourne 2030 strategy to slow urban sprawl.

In a move that will infuriate some councils but win the support of property industry groups, the Government will legislate for special panels to take control of 26 centres, including Frankston, Wantirna, Airport West and Geelong, dubbed as "principal activity centres" or transit cities in the metropolitan growth blueprint Melbourne 2030.
